Senior Vice President & Chief Medical Officer, Optima Health

Dr Tom Lundquist is Senior Vice President & Chief Medical Officer at Optima Health, a division of Sentara Healthcare, where he leads clinical care services and pharmacy. For the past three years he also led network management, analytics and value-based care strategy development. He is part of the senior leadership team and leads the plans efforts in evolving and embracing innovative provider payer partnerships and help to promote clinical integration and accountable care models in the markets they currently serve and those they are expanding to serve.

Formerly, Lundquist was President & CEO of AnewCare Collaborative, a successful Accountable Care Organization in Northeast TN and Southwest VA launched by the Mountain States Health Alliance, where he led health system redesign and payment innovation promoting value-driven health care in the markets it served.   Before joining AnewCare, Lundquist was VP, Performance Measurement & Improvement at BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee where he led efforts to establish new payment methodologies through such programs as Pay for Performance, Pay for Quality, support of Patient Centered Medical Homes, Bundled Payments and Accountable Care System partnerships.  Throughout his career, Lundquist has demonstrated a deep passion and commitment to help change the way health care is delivered and to improve quality and experience for patients and providers.

Lundquist received his Master’s in medical management from Carnegie Mellon University and completed his Doctorate of Medicine and residency at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.  He served as Adjunct Professor at the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy & Management at Carnegie Mellon from 2006 through 2013 for the Masters in Medical Management program where he taught physician executives pursuing their Masters in the subjects of Health Care Quality and Executive Leadership.

He is a fellow of the American College of Physician Executives and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.  In 2002 he was awarded the Caritas Flame of Hope “Heroes of Healing” by Catholic Charities in Pittsburgh. Lundquist has served on numerous Boards during his career and currently serves as President of the American Heart Association’s Hampton Roads Board of Directors.  A recent finisher in the 2019 Virginia 70.3 Ironman Triathlon, he and his wife of 29 years in Virginia Beach have seven children in various stages of school, college and careers, as well as, two beautiful grandchildren.
